Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (HBE), a native, Chicago-bred Hip-Hop Fusion Brass Band with Jazz and Funk roots, is pleased to announce the release the first single ‘Mary,’ off of their upcoming album ‘Bad Boys of Jazz,’ set to drop in October 2018. The group debuted the single at Today at Apple on Michigan Ave in Chicago on July 25th, 2018 at 7 p.m.
“Apple’s next-generation stores are aiming to bridge the gap between technology and the liberal arts, something that we (HBE) have been implementing into our work from the beginning.” says Gabriel Hubert, band member of HBE. “We make it a point to go into the local schools (K-12) and teach them about the importance of incorporating music into their lives -it’s what H.Y.P.N.O.T.I.C. stands for… literally, Help the Young People NOTICe, give the children a reason to incorporate music into their lives.”
Exhibiting Hip-Hop with a smooth jazz vibe, “Mary” brings forward the entrancing abilities women have and the importance of having a strong woman in your tribe. Constantly focused on higher consciousness and connectivity, HBE connects their previous album ‘Book of Sound,’ which featured the mothers of the band members, to a clear reminder of the power a woman has in captivating and empowering.
“The group’s fusion of funk, jazz and hip-hop is a propulsive pleasure, and…we could do with seeing and hearing even more of it.” says The New York Times, writer Nicolas Rapold.
With the release of ‘Mary’, HBE is excited to share their new music during the following performances (with more dates to be added):
08/10) NEFERTITI @Gothenburg, Sweden

Earlier this month, our client, Alisha Shoates James, took the main stage with Mothers of Black Boys United (M.O.B.B. United) at the 2018 Essence Festival in New Orleans. She had an opportunity to share her expertise through a platform designed by the non-profit to discuss law enforcement, criminal justice reform, community involvement and leadership. M.O.B.B. member, Vanessa McCullars moderated the discussion and spoke with Alisha on Friday and a fellow colleague, Ed Welch, on Saturday.
Essence Festival is a 4-day celebration of African-American women, culture and music hosted by Essence Magazine and is commonly referred to as a “party with a purpose.”

Alisha was invited to speak at Essence because of her law enforcement expertise, public service and entrepreneurial role as founder of Ten-Four Clothing – a clothing line for women who carry concealed weapons. She was able to provide insight on one of the most difficult issues in America right now.
Together, Moms of Black Boys United (M.O.B.B.), Alisha and Ed discussed how to mend the relationship between law enforcement and the minority community.
The M.O.B.B. United movement and organization started in 2016 as a Facebook group for 30 friends to share their concerns, fears and possible solutions for the challenges their sons face. The group took off overnight and now has over 185,000 members and has developed into two non-profit organizations.
Alisha (stylishly) advocates for law enforcement that focuses on community-focused policing, sensible gun laws, criminal justice reform and social justice. Yet, her beliefs (and position) often have her standing at an intersection of what two distinct voices, in the United States, believe today.
“We are always balancing between two worlds, so I understand living in the intersection of this very important discussion,” says James. “If we actually talked with each other – and not at each other – we’d find so much in common and be able to create new methods and measurable results that speak to our similarities.”
She believes there is more involved in this type of conversation than the polarizing (and singular) positions of ‘you are either for gun control or against it.’ In fact, there are multiple views and opinions that have yet to be heard…and must be included to find sensible solutions.
Just because she believes in the Second Amendment, it doesn’t mean that she’s anti-gun-reform.

Experienced executive to broaden impact of community-based organization focused on eradicating HIV/AIDS and the associated stigma.
Street Works, a non-profit providing education, prevention and care to those affected by HIV/AIDS in Nashville has promoted Sharon W. Hurt, removing the interim tag and naming her executive director. Hurt served as interim for seven months, after the organization opened a national search to fill the role.
“Sharon has led and stabilized the organization by consolidating multiple processes, as well as streamlining our operations,” said Kion Sawney, Street Works board chair. “Sharon has an excellent track record as a creative thinker and consensus builder,” Sawney continued. “After a national search, our board felt that she is the right choice for our organization.”
Hurt will continue to serve as the President & CEO of the Jefferson Street United Merchants Partnership (J.U.M.P.) as approved by its board of directors. She will lead both organizations.
Street Works recently consolidated from multiple locations around Nashville and into the same office suites as J.U.M.P. The move proved to be highly effective as the more convenient location has increased productivity and synergy for staff.
“A focused, diligent leader is what we’ve learned to use in describing Sharon, as she jumped in to assist us during our transition,” Sawney said. “She has proven she is able to leverage her various roles in the community to improve Street Works. We are privileged to have someone of her caliber and who is so deeply rooted in our community.”
During Hurt’s time as interim executive director of Street Works, the organization received the first designation in the State of Tennessee for the new Syringe Service Program, which has served over 1700 persons in the first month. She has initiated a proactive media relations program which already garnered both local and national media presence, as well as reducing turnover rates for the organization.
“As leaders, we must be courageous enough to think about and do things differently,” said Hurt. “From various professional experiences, I have learned to build and evolve to improve others, organizations and myself. It’s an honor to serve both, while leading and managing two roles as a change agent.”

With more than 4,000 Nashvillians living with HIV, Mayor David Briley today announced the appointment of the city’s first Ending the Epidemic Task Force and named Meharry Medical College President Dr. James Hildreth as chairman.
The task force is created in conjunction with the Office of the Mayor, the Metro Public Health Department and community stakeholders in response to the Ending the Epidemic summit held this past December and is dedicated to improving access to care and services for those living with HIV and expanding prevention strategies to eliminate future infections. The task force held its first meeting today.
“HIV/AIDS is an often hidden but devastating epidemic that is impacting far too many Nashvillians, but the end is truly in sight,” said Mayor Briley. “I look forward to working with the task force on its efforts to reduce stigma and ultimately eliminate what is a preventable disease. I’m grateful to all of these leaders for their commitment to serve.”
Ending the Epidemic is a national movement and several cities and states have developed plans to end the HIV epidemic in their communities. A true end to HIV will not come until there is a cure, but new science and tools are now available to bend the trajectory of this disease to pre-epidemic levels. Nashville is participating in a cohort of other southern jurisdictions with assistance from receiving Treatment Action Group and the Southern AIDS Coalition.
“At Metro Public Health Department, we see ourselves as part of a care team with one patient – the city of Nashville. Through the Ending the Epidemic process, we are making a commitment to identifying the barriers to treatment and care and developing those interventions that will lead us on a path to End the HIV epidemic in our community once and for all,” said Dr. Paul.
The task force will serve as a high-level advisory body and oversee an inclusive, community-led planning process, which is expected to produce a plan before World AIDS Day on December 1. Recommendations are expected to include initiatives and action steps that will raise awareness, reduce stigma, improve care and support for people living with HIV, and focus on prevention efforts that have the potential to eliminate future infections.
“This is a critically important step for the public health community, and I am ready to get to work on efforts that will provide hope by changing the trajectory of this preventable disease that is hurting so many people,” Dr. Hildreth, who has worked tirelessly in the fight against HIV and AIDS for decades.
The following multi-sector stakeholders are appointed by Mayor Briley to the Ending the Epidemic Task Force:

Our Client Tennessee Jazz & Blues Society (TJBS) hosted their first Great Albums Concert Series of 2018 with a tribute to “John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman,” the duet album by the two Jazz icons. The Great Albums series has found a new home at City Winery in the upstairs lounge. This performance featured saxophonist Rahsaan Barber and vocalist Kevin Whalum.
The night began with Rahsaan and Kevin accompanied by Matt Endahl on piano, Jonathon Wires on bass and Jeff Lien on drums performing the album in its entirety. The performers filled the set with a few other Coltrane and Hartman classics in the evening including “In a Sentimental Mood” by John Coltrane from the 1997 romantic drama movie, Love Jones.
The pairing of Barber and Whalum for this date is an inspired choice that mirrors the original Coltrane/Hartman pairing. Barber, a longtime Nashville favorite, is an adventurous improviser who cites Coltrane as one of his many influences. Whalum (brother of saxophonist Kirk Whalum) is best known for his contemporary jazz work, but is also an outstanding interpreter of straight-ahead jazz, and ballads are a particular forte.
“Having access to the best musicians Music City is has to offer, is nothing less than amazing and makes presenting this series easy and effective.”, says TJBS President, Teree Campbelle-McCormick. “The format and selection process used to choose the iconic album, or the featured artist along with the right venue partner, guarantees an incredible experience and memorable evening for audience and performer alike.
The classic 1963 recording of John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman was the first time Coltrane and Hartman had performed or recorded together, though the two had known each other since the 1940’s. The record was Coltrane’s idea, and Hartman was reportedly hesitant at first because he didn’t consider himself a jazz singer. The album consisted of six tunes, including versions of “My One and Only Love” and “Lush Life” that are considered definitive.

Clare Brannet of The Tennesse Tribune joined us during the evening and wrote a great review of the show.
TJBS is excited to continue the Great Albums series to a new home at City Winery in 2018. The City Winery’s Upstairs Lounge has comfortable seating and great acoustics, and patrons can enjoy a wonderful dinner with drinks while seeing the show. TJBS has curated the remainder of the 2018 Great Albums concert series with City Winery. The next dates for the series is April 22nd, May 6th and June 3rd 2018 themes to follow.
TJBS thanks Nashville for their support and we hope that you will join them for the next Great Albums concert series. Check out a few images from the event on TJBS’ Facebook page.

Street Works, a nonprofit focused on preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS and HEP C through supportive services for those infected and affected, is pleased to announce on Valentine’s Day that it is the first in the State of Tennessee to be designated and provide the Syringe Service Program.
Last year, State Senator Steve Dickerson (R), with support from Governor Bill Haslam, was able to successfully pass Senate Bill #806 which also overwhelmingly passed the Tennessee House.
“It’s a rare circumstance when I can look at you at say, ‘This bill is going to save people’s lives,’ ” said Sen. Dickerson, who is also an anesthesiologist. “But this bill will save people’s lives and save the taxpayers literally tens of millions of dollars a year.”
The bill authorized statewide needle exchange programs as long as organizations provide additional services to treat and counsel those who inject themselves with drugs. It has taken a year for the bill to be put into action.
“We are honored to be the first in the State to provide this life-saving program,” said Sharon W. Hurt, interim executive director of Street Works. “Street Works is an organization of action and prevention. This along with the other services we provide will support our goal to go out of business…one day. Eradicating the spread of HIV and AIDS, as well as HEP C only happens when measures like this, spearheaded by Sen. Dickerson allows organizations like ours to provide care to communities at the greatest risk.”
For the last 20 years, Street Works has provided supportive services to persons living with HIV disease in the middle Tennessee area. It is now part of the National Needle Exchange Program and is listed on the organization’s website as a provider https://nasen.org/directory/tn/.

Home for the Super Bowl Live 10-day concert series, the duo connect with the community at Lewis’ alma mater, giving back to the place where it all began.
The iconic songwriting and record production team, James Samuel “Jimmy Jam” Harris III and Terry S. Lewis, will visit with students from North Community High School (1500 James Ave N., Minneapolis, MN 55411) on Wednesday, January 31, 2018. When the opportunity to return to Minneapolis to curate a 10-day music festival arose, community engagement was at the top of their to-do list. North is Lewis’ alma mater and presented a perfect opportunity for the duo, known for solidifying the careers of artists across many genres, to give back to the community that launched their 30-year career.
“I want these kids to know that I am (we are) their story and that anything is possible because I was once in the exact same place that they are today, as a student in this exact school,” said Lewis. “It’s very important for us to keep in touch with the community. We want to lend strength, hope and inspiration to these kids so we can hear what their aspirations and hopes are and support them in achieving their dreams…we want to be there for them.”
In addition to speaking to the student body, Jam and Lewis will be interviewed by Journalism students for the community publication, produced for the entire Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) system, and tour Jazz88.FM-KBEM, a self-supporting station licensed to MPS. Jam and Lewis learned of the program and became even more intrigued after learning that students participate in KBEM’s hands-on educational program, focusing on all aspects of broadcasting and production. Traditionally the program is made up of North High students, but the School News segment incorporates students from around the city, and summer employees through the Step-Up program.
“Education is the core of why Terry and I met,” said Harris. “I grew up on the south side of town, but the north side of town is really what raised me, in fact, North High School was a common thread for so many of us, even if we didn’t attend there. So, it will be great to go back, see the school and students, especially to see the radio station! I was once a DJ, so it will be exciting to experience this portion of the students’ education.”
Jam and Lewis will speak to the student body at 09:30 a.m. The student-led program will include a question and answer session where students have a chance to ask the two about their career.
Additional program participants Mayor Jacob Frey and others to be announced.
